Looking Up Together: How Curiosity Connects the Moon and Our Community

On July 20, the world celebrates the anniversary of the Apollo 11 Moon landing. More than fifty years ago, humanity accomplished something that once seemed impossible. When Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin walked on the Moon in 1969, they proved that curiosity, education, and collaboration can take us farther than we ever imagined.

That same spirit of exploration continues to inspire us today.

At Na'atik, we believe that every meaningful journey begins with curiosity. Sometimes that curiosity inspires someone to travel across the world to learn Spanish. Other times, it encourages a local student to ask questions about the stars, the planets, and the universe beyond our own.

This month, as we celebrate one of humanity's greatest achievements, we are reminded that education has the power to transform lives in many different ways.

Through our English programs, local children and young people develop the language skills that can open doors to higher education, new careers, and opportunities they may never have imagined. Throughout the year, many of our students also participate in science and astronomy workshops where they have the opportunity to look through telescopes, observe the Moon and planets, and discover the excitement of scientific exploration.

For many children, it is their first time looking through a telescope. It is a simple moment, yet one that often sparks countless questions and endless imagination. Those experiences remind us that curiosity is one of the greatest gifts education can nurture.

The same curiosity brings students from around the world to Felipe Carrillo Puerto.

They come to improve their Spanish or learn Maya, but they quickly discover that language learning is about much more than grammar and vocabulary. Living with a host family allows them to experience everyday life in an authentic Mexican community. Conversations around the dinner table become language lessons. Trips to the local market become opportunities to practice Spanish. Family celebrations, neighborhood walks, and shared traditions become moments of cultural understanding that no classroom alone could ever provide.

Felipe Carrillo Puerto offers something increasingly rare. It is a place where the Maya language and culture continue to thrive, where community remains at the heart of daily life, and where visitors have the opportunity to experience a side of Mexico that many travelers never see.

What makes this experience even more meaningful is the impact it creates beyond each visitor's own journey.

Na'atik is a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding educational opportunities in the Maya region. Every student who joins one of our Spanish or Maya immersion programs helps make that mission possible. Income from our immersion programs, together with the generosity of donors and supporters, helps subsidize English classes and provide scholarships for local and Indigenous students.

When someone chooses to study at Na'atik, they are not only investing in their own education. They are also investing in the future of our community by helping young people gain skills, confidence, and opportunities that can last a lifetime.

The Apollo 11 mission showed the world how far curiosity can take us. At Na'atik, we see that same curiosity every day. We see it in our immersion students as they learn a new language and embrace a different culture. We see it in local children as they look through a telescope for the first time and wonder what lies beyond the stars.

Whether they are traveling across continents to learn Spanish or looking through a telescope in Felipe Carrillo Puerto for the very first time, they all remind us that education has the power to change lives, expand horizons, and bring people together.
