Honoring the Living Heritage of the Maya People
On August 9, we celebrate the International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples, recognizing the cultures, languages, traditions, and knowledge that Indigenous communities continue to share with the world.
For us at Na'atik, this day is especially meaningful because it celebrates the very community that makes our work possible.
Located in Felipe Carrillo Puerto, in the heart of the Maya region of southern Quintana Roo, Na'atik is surrounded by a living culture that continues to thrive. Here, the Maya language is spoken in homes and marketplaces, traditional recipes are lovingly prepared by families, ancient knowledge is passed from one generation to the next, and community celebrations preserve customs that have endured for centuries.
The Maya culture is far more than the remarkable archaeological sites that attract millions of visitors to Mexico each year. It is a vibrant living culture shaped by its people, their language, their stories, and their deep connection to the land.
This is what makes every Na'atik experience unique.
Whether students come to learn Spanish, Maya, or participate in one of our cultural immersion programs, they do much more than attend classes. They share meals with Maya host families, learn local traditions, hear the language spoken in everyday life, and experience the warmth and generosity of a community that proudly preserves its heritage while embracing cultural exchange.
Our mission has always been to create meaningful connections through language and culture. Every student who visits, every volunteer who gives their time, every donor who supports our work, and every host family who opens their home helps strengthen a model built on mutual learning and respect.
At the same time, our educational programs create opportunities for local children and young people to study English, opening doors while encouraging them to remain proud of their own language, culture, and identity. Through this exchange, visitors leave with a deeper understanding of the Maya world, while our community gains greater opportunities through education and international friendships.
The International Day of the World's Indigenous Peoples is also a reminder that Indigenous knowledge has much to teach us. From sustainable relationships with nature to strong community values and rich oral traditions, the wisdom preserved by Indigenous peoples continues to inspire solutions for the future while honoring the past.
