Student Stories: Tony

I am currently living in Australia and my mornings start with Spanish every day. I wake up, eat breakfast, and then jump online to learn with my teacher Pedro. I have just passed my bar exam and wanted to learn Spanish to help me communicate with different people from different cultures in my new job as a lawyer. I began my Spanish journey in Carrillo, but unfortunately, the Covid-19 epidemic cut my time short.

While in Carrillo, I lived with the Tus family and loved every minute of it. Carrillo is a safe and friendly town with the tastiest food. I was even able to help coach the local kids' basketball team when I was there - that was not part of the program, but I mention it to highlight how much fun I had in Carrillo and how welcomed you are into the community!I had planned to stay another three weeks to continue studying at the school, but I have not missed a beat thanks to Na’atik’s online classes.

I’m getting closer to fluency each day, and I love the flexibility of being able to learn in my own home. Not only have I learned grammar and vocabulary but in my classes we discuss Mexican and world history along with other interesting topics  which I believe helped me to remember and retain Spanish at a quicker pace. Pedro makes all classes fun with his teaching style and I truly believe I have made a lifelong friend.

It’s awesome to be able to learn and practice my Spanish even though we are in different parts of the world!

The best way to experience the Mexican lifestyle is in person, with a Na’atik Immersion experience. Not only do you live with a local Mexican-Maya family, sharing home-cooked meals and free time, but also receive expert instruction in your chosen language at our school. Best of all, every immersion experience helps fund our subsidized and free local education program, helping local students to access opportunities and make their own futures.
