Maya Immersion Student, Jasmina

This month we interviewed immersion student, Jasmina, about her experience in our Maya language program at Na’atik. Jasmina is originally from Serbia but has been a US resident for more than 20 years. She has always been interested in Latin American culture, travels extensively around Mexico and has a BA in Spanish.  After hearing the Maya language during her time in the Yucatán Peninsula, her interest in learning the language piqued. Following our former Maya language student,  Ari's, journey on his YouTube channel Xiaomanyc, motivated her to come to Carrillo and experience Na'atik's Maya immersion program for herself.

Q. What appealed to you about Carrillo?

A.  Ari's experience with his Na’atik host family, seeing the school and seeing how he lived really impressed me. I didn't even consider other alternatives; I just decided to come.

Q. What was your first impression of Carrillo?

A. It was very colorful and very safe, especially after being in Playa Del Carmen. It is a very cute little town.

Q. What was your experience like staying with a homestay family?

A. It was beautiful. I didn't expect it to be that way because I've never done anything like it: "Hi, my name is Jasmina and I'll be staying in your house!" But of course, in the beginning you feel shy because you don't want to disturb people in their home but it was wonderful.

In my case I had a separate entrance into my room. The family was great. I stayed with a couple and although their children are older and have all moved out I got to meet them for the Janal Pixan [Maya Day of the Dead] celebrations. They made me feel very welcome and I really enjoyed it. The amenities were simple, but it's how they live and I felt like I was a part of it. I didn't lack anything. I had a nice bed, a hammock, and bathroom and shower. Everything that you would need. I felt like I was well taken care of and I felt very welcome.

Q. How were your Na'atik classes?

A. My Maya teacher was Paulino and he was excellent.  I felt like I learned so much in these few days! He's a great teacher and he was able to show me everything and teach me slowly. He made me feel like I was really getting it! I had an amazing experience with him.

Q. What was your favorite activity?

My favorite activity was the trip to Xpichil, a very small authentic Maya town 45 minutes from Carrillo. They have these round houses with palapa roofs. We went to visit weaver women who make beautiful traditional Maya dresses.  I had never been to anywhere so remote and so...real.

Q. Would you recommend Na'atik's Maya immersion experience program?

Yes! Absolutely! I would recommend it to anyone who is interested in immersion. Everything was seamless and beautifully organized. It was an amazing experience and I would definitely recommend it.
