Supporter Spotlight: Fiona

My name is Fiona Scheer and I am 16 years old. I just moved to Bellingham, Washington but I have lived all over the world. I lived in Germany for seven years, Hong Kong for three years and  different places in the USA for the remainder of the time. Everywhere I’ve lived I’ve always joined Girl Scouts or Girl Guides. In Hong Kong I was a Girl Guide and earned the Lady Jane Award, one of the highest awards in Hong Kong Guiding. I am now working on my Girl Scout Gold Award, the highest award in Girl Scouts of the USA.

While not doing Girl Scouts or studying, I love to read, crochet and am on a rowing team. Currently, I am a junior in high school and one of my favorite subjects throughout school has always been Spanish. My mom, brother and I actually studied Spanish at Na’atik when I was 12 for a month.

The Girl Scout Gold Award has you pick an issue and investigate the root cause, then create an action plan in order to tackle that issue. I have always wanted to be a teacher and would like to get a degree in education in college. Furthermore, I have always valued and had a passion for education which is one of the reasons I chose to work with Na’atik for my Girl Scout Gold Award.

I am very excited to be working on this project for Na’atik. Na’atik is special to me and I have fond memories of the school and Felipe Carrillo Puerto from my time there.  For my project I am planning to provide Na'atik with new whiteboards and projectors in order to help support the teachers in teaching English to the local students. Na’atik is an amazing organization that is able to reach and help so many people.

At Na’atik we are very grateful to Fiona for her ongoing support, and are looking forward to hopefully seeing her here in Carrillo this summer. Providing our students with a dignified learning space is a key part of our mission, as it helps encourage them to take pride in their learning, and ensures we can deliver lessons without distractions or discomfort for them.

To find out more about how you can support Na’atik’s projects visit out impact page. Without the support of people like you we would not be able to help so many local and Indigenous children to build their own futures.
